Quinta Stone's eighteenth birthday marks 88 years since Earth died, and the odds of her surviving another year on the red planet just plummeted.
Quinta should have been assigned to the biology lab as her father's apprentice, working on a cure for the Martian virus that has already wiped out two generations of colonists.
Instead, the AI that runs the colony with ruthless efficiency has assigned her to the dig teamโthe most dangerous job on Mars. The colony is suffocating inside its crumbling habitat, and the AIโs data-driven decisions are absolute, reinforced by a point system that keeps colony safe in a brutal environment.
But Glass sleeps in the regolith, and to dig is a death sentence.
The AI's only priority is the colony's survival. So why is Quinta being sent to die?

Who writes dystopian fiction in the Year of Oh-Dear-Lord 2025?
It's me, Kaylin! My jam is futuristic fiction where nothing is quite as it seems and something sinister is always bubbling beneath the surface, but tight-knit communities are always ready to fight the good fight.
I believe dystopian fiction is ultimately about hope and righting wrongs, and maybe also a how-to manual for the resistance. Plus, who doesn't love seeing a villain get a really well-deserved comeuppance?
I write near-future thrillers with lots of snark, a dash of romance, and plenty of escapism because the world is bad enough without fiction you can get lost in.
If this sounds like your jam too, let's be friends! I hang out on Threads and Bluesky.
